Short bio: Levente Buttyán was born in 1970 in Salgótarján, Hungary. He received the M.Sc. degree in Computer Science from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) in 1995 and the Ph.D. degree from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology - Lausanne (EPFL) in 2002. In 2003, he joined the Department of Networked Systems and Services at BME, where he currently holds a position as a full Professor and leads the Laboratory of Cryptography and Systems Security (CrySyS Lab). He received habilitation at BME in 2013 and the title of Doctor of Science form the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2021. He has done research on the design and analysis of secure protocols and privacy enhancing mechanisms for wireless networked embedded systems (including wireless sensor networks, mesh networks, vehicular communications, and RFID systems). A few years ago, he was involved in the analysis of some high profile targeted malware, such as Duqu, Flame, MiniDuke, and TeamSpy. Currently, his research interest is in security of cyber-physical systems (including industrial automation and conrtrol systems, modern vehicles, cooperative intelligent transport systems, and the Internet of Things in general).

Levente Buttyán has carried out research in various international research projects (e.g., UbiSecSens, SeVeCom, EU-MESH, WSAN4CIP), in which he had task leader and work package leader roles. He published several refereed journal articles and conference/workshop papers. He also co-authored a book with Prof. Jean-Pierre Hubaux on Security and Cooperation in Wireless Networks published by the Cambridge University Press in 2008, and with Máté Horváth on Cryptographic Obfuscation (a Survey) published by Springer in 2020. Besides research, he has been teaching courses on applied cryptography and IT security in the BProf, BSc, and MSc programs at BME and at the Aquincum Institute of Technology (AIT Budapest), and gave invited lectures at various places. Occasionally, he also provides consulting services, and he has co-founded multiple spin-off companies: Tresorit, Ukatemi Technologies, and Avatao.

Levente Buttyán served as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing from 2009 to 2012, as an Area Editor of Elsevier Computer Communications from 2008 to 2012, and as member of the Editorial Board of the Hungarian Infocommunications Journal from 2007 to 2014. He was also a Guest Co-editor of the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, Special Issue on Non-cooperative Behavior in Networking. He was a Steering Committee member of the ACM Conference on Security and Privacy in Wireless and Mobile Networks from 2007 to 2013, and he served on the Technical Program Committees of several international conferences and workshops, most of which were related to wireless network security. From 2008 to 2011, he was the chair of the Scientific Committee of the Scientific Association for Infocommunications - Hungary, a sister society of the IEEE Communications Society. He is a member of the John von Neumann Computer Society - Hungary and the ACM.

Levente Buttyán held visiting poisitions at EPFL and at the University of Washington, Seattle. He received the Békésy György Postdoctoral Fellowship (2003--2006) and the Bolyai János Research Fellowship (2008-2011) of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In 2017, he was awarded with the Apáczai Csere János Award of the Ministry of Human Resources, Hungary. He also received the Outstanding Lecturer Award of BME's Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science multiple times.
