Microcontroller based process simulator for industrial testbed

2016-2017/II.
Dr. Holczer Tamás

The security of industrial control systems is a hot topic in IT security. More and more things are networked (Internet of things) like small sensors or power plants. The security analysis of such networks are crucial. Unfortunately these networks are normally in production, so
a security test is unacceptable. To mitigate this problem, testbeds are used. We are building an industrial security testbed with the help of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The task of the student is to develop a microcontroller (e.g. Raspberry Pi) based process simulator, which helps the testing of PLCs  (Programmabel Logic Controller). This task consists of a minimal hardware
design (with the help of the Digital Signal Processing group), and software design task. Ideally the product can be connected to different PLCs, can simulate different processes, and can visualize the
current status of the simulated process.
