Automating Security Validation in a Hardware-in-the-Loop Environment

2023-2024/II.
Dr. Buttyán Levente

The electric power steering system (EPS) stands as a safety-critical human-machine interface, necessitating thorough attention to cybersecurity during its development. To address this, the Product Cybersecurity Architect conducts a comprehensive Threat Analysis and Risk Assessment (TARA) at the onset of the development life cycle. The TARA results in the definition of Cybersecurity Goals, which are system-level requirements guiding various aspects of product development, including software, hardware, and manufacturing.

As the product development cycle concludes, a crucial security validation ensues. The Security Testing team employs manual tests to ensure the proper implementation of the Cybersecurity Goals. Unfortunately, conducting security validation late in the development cycle makes addressing emerging risks costly and challenging to schedule.

The objective of this thesis project is to integrate automated generic test cases into the relevant test environments. This integration aims to support the execution and enhancement of individual test cases before the final security validation occurs. The work of the student should include:

-       A literature study on cyber security validation methods;

-       A literature study on different test environments used in the industry;

-       Specification and implementation of test cases that support security validation and that are executable in the appropriate test environment;

Documentation of the work.
