Is That Really Your Boss Calling? The current state of audio deepfake attacks and how to tackle them

Abstract

Recent advances in voice cloning technologies have dramatically lowered the barrier to generating highly convincing audio deepfakes, enabling scalable and targeted social engineering attacks. This presentation starts with examining the evolving threat landscape of audio-based deepfakes, including an analysis of real-world incidents, types of attacks, and some documented cases resulting in losses of several million euros. To address these risks, we first demonstrate our audio deepfake detection system across different benchmarks and practical scenarios. However, deepfake detection is only a partial solution to the overall problem. We therefore introduce a framework for securing audio communications by signing the audio samples as close to the source (i.e., the microphone) as possible.

Our approach builds upon the C2PA standard to establish a verifiable provenance chain. To address the practical limitation that such metadata is often stripped during transmission, we propose a novel audio fingerprinting method tailored to real-world audio conditions and robust to channel distortions. This enables the recovery and verification of provenance information even when metadata is lost. Together, these components form a layered defense architecture that integrates detection, provenance, and signal-level verification. We demonstrate how this system strengthens trust in audio communications and offers a practical pathway toward mitigating deepfake-driven threats in real-world environments.
